This is how it happend: Part 3.

3-2-09 Tuesday Morning 2:45 am

AF-201.

I must admit that God is not biased to anyone.
When Binu’s first wish was mercilessly turned down, his second wish was granted whole heartedly.

So eventhough the airhostesses were all old, I got my seat near to a lady.

"Fair deal", I thought in the dim light.

Then as I sat near to the beautiful lady, my eyes got adjusted with the light inside and I discovered that she was older than the air hostesses.

"Thank you God, that was a good one!",
I thanked Him, appreciated his humor sense and went to sleep which lasted almost throughout the flight.

“This happens only in Cinema”, I sang in tune to a familiar hindi song.

After all, 'Hum Tum' was only that much.

By around 9 25am, I reached Paris and the connection flight to Detroit was at 10 45am. To even my surprise, I managed to find the right terminal. The story inside AF-373 was a repetition except that there was no one to sit near me. All my fantasies about missing the flight in Paris and roaming around with an Indian fairy started looking very stupid.

I turned on the TV, switched to World Cinema and watched “Bachna Ae Haseeno”. It sucked.

“This happens only Only ONLY in Cinema”, I hummed again and drifted into timeless space.

3-2-2009 Tuesday 3.15 pm

Detroit Airport.

The renowned US customs was totally fooled and I smuggled 5kg of rice, 2kg of sugar, peas, grams etc into the US territory. It was freezing cold outside. But people were standing there waiting for taxi cabs.

I joined them.

Cabs were coming and people were leaving and I was still standing there thinking what to do next. At last I tried what I had seen in Hollywood movies to catch the cab.

I raised my arm as stiff and high as I can and in perfect sync with those arriving cabs.

Nothing happened!!

Not even a single cab stopped by me. They just went past me to reach the whites standing over there.

“Racially discriminating as*****s, ba*****s”, spraying them with foul words, I somehow controlled my sudden rage to hit them and run.

Finally after a number of failed attempts, I asked another white who was watching me all these times to know that those were all booked cabs and the pre-paid taxis were available on the 4th floor, other side of the building.

“Well, the story begins now!”, I thought.

On my way to the pre-paid taxi counter, I asked another white for directions and she cut me off so rudely saying that she doesn’t need any cab right now.

As I was searching for the pre-paid counter (my only experience with the pre-paid services was the one for auto rikshaws at Thambanoor railway station and there used to be a long queue always), another white came to me and asked whether I was looking for cab service or not. On nodding yes, she took me to her cab, helped me put my luggage inside and finally dumped me with a Sikh driver.

"Fine, atleast he is from my country.Mera Bharat Mahan!!"

Although I had heard a lot that most of the Indian taxi cab drivers are Sikhs, I never expected that my first cab driver in US will be a Sardarjee.

He looked at me for sometime but his face was expressionless.

“I am also from India”, I told him as I sat myself in the car.

He just nodded.

“Poor guy must have had a fight with his wife early in the morning”, I tried to console myself for his cold response.

He asked me my destination and I started searching for the piece of paper on which I had written the address.

Its gone!

The sardarjee's face was turning red. I feared that it may explode at any moment and I told him the address from my vague memory.

“Oye Maloom hain”, he just accelerated the machine in full throttle pressing me against the back seat…..

5 minutes later....

Slowly the ice broke and we started talking. Though I started my conversation in English, soon I switched to Hindi and out of excitement I even switched to Malayalam in between. He seemed to understand whatever I was saying or at least he nodded to all my pauses.

I talked to him during the whole span of the short journey. He asked me about the climate in India, the state where I belong, how I learnt Hindi etc etc and then about the Mumbai terror attacks. He even showed me the 25 different ways of Nuking Pakistan.

After about 30 minutes of non stop talking with hindi songs playing in the background, he dropped me infront of TownPlace Suites, Foxdrive, Livonia (This was what I had told him).

And it was time to pay. My first in dollars. To an Indian.

He charged me only 40, even though the meter showed 46.

"Sasriakal", I said in style.

He looked at me and smiled.

"Sasriakal", he said and drove his cab away as I carried my luggage to the hotel front desk.

As I was entering through the door, my mind was recollecting all the Hollywood movies that I had ever seen.

"I can handle all situations, Hollywood has got it all baby…"

I approached the front desk. A black was sitting there.

I noticed her name-tag in a short glance.

Ebony.

She raised her face sensing someone standing in front and our eyes met. Well, I know what is going to happen next, I have seen enough Hollywood movies to handle every…...

“Aah u Wazhie Sheezham? Aah u goin 2 zheckin tonyt??”

“Eh??”, I starred at her.

I need sub titles...!!

“Aah u goin 2 zheckin tonyt?!!”

“Ah, yes!”, it took me sometime to recover.

“Ok, I need your Credit card..”

“Here!”, My James Bond smile returned.

She squeezed the money out of it and handed it back to me.

“Thank you sir! Your suite is 221, and that is right there in the other building, 2nd floor. The staircase is over there towards the left and if you want to use the lift, it is at the extreme right of that corridor. Here is your swipe card. Have a nice stay at Townplace suites, Livonia. We were waiting for you…..”, once the card worked, she became very friendly!

3-2-09 Tuesday, 4.20pm

Suite No 221, Townplace suites, Livonia.

I dragged myself and my luggage into the room and switched on the lights.

“Clean!”, that was the first word that came out of me.

In addition to the bed room, there was a well equipped open kitchen, a locker room and the bathroom and everything about it was very neat and clean. They even provide free internet access to its guests. I liked it.

I pulled out my laptop and tried to connect it to the access point only to learn that I do not have the cable with me. I called Ebony again and she gave me one long cable to use. I liked her too…

I sent out mails to my near and dear updating them with my safe arrival.

So here I am.
Alone, in the land of opportunities.

This is how it happend: Part 2.

3-2-09 Monday night 9.00 pm

Apartment, Chennai.

Packing ,dinner and even dressing up to the occasion (and I am telling you, this is the important stuff!) were over.

I had to catch the flight at 2:30 in the morning.

Since global economy had gone for a trip to Mariana trench, I borrowed my roomie’s (BinuRC) big bag to carry my stuffs. I also borrowed his winter coat, his gloves, his cap, his thermal wear and almost everything which he had purchased for himself when he was abroad.

"See man, how deep our friendship is. Foreigners should learn from us", I said this to console him although he paid no attention.

All bbye stuffs were over, all do’s-n-don’ts instructions from my mother were over and even the waiting for the cab.

"Bbye mates, I will be missing u all…..".

Binu even hugged me and wished me a safe return. I was taking away his stuffs with me!

2-2-09 Monday night. 11.00 pm

Chennai airport.

It was a good feeling when all the cars around me turned to the domestic flights terminal and we headed towards the international. I had managed to drag Binu along with me to the airport. He was experienced, so I let him do everything for me. He brought the trolley, he loaded it with my luggage, he pushed it to the terminal gate and then we waited.

Binu was looking a little tensed.

“What man, why r u looking tensed?”, I asked.

“I was praying for your good”, and that was his reply.

"He started missing me already??", I was in confusion.

“I was praying that ur adjacent seats shall all be occupied by men”, he whispered in the same tensed tone.

“And the air hostesses are all old and…”, and before he could pray for more, I had to divert his attention to a foreigner standing nearby.

He got busy until my flight was announced!

That is how it happened (Part:1)

09-1-2009 Friday morning.
My office in Chennai.

I had just reached my seat.

A sigh of relief came out from me and I thanked God Almighty for keeping it exactly where I had left it last night.

And I could hear similar sighs from adjacent cubicles.

Yea, nobody knows when they will take away your seat!!

"So they still need me!", I thought as my heart rate started dropping to its weekend value.

"Ollrite...,Cool.....,So lets do it!", I switched on my PC and let the mouse pointer look for outlook express. They kind of like each other.

"A good day in office begins with good e-mails. They are as refreshing as morning coffee", I thought and
this philosophy is shared by all of my friends.

I opened my outlook and mails started popping up. As usual they were in plenty.

"They never lets me down!",
most of them were from my RIT and CDAC buddies.

And as the dedicated employee in me was going through each and every e-mails carefully, this one hit my eyes.

“Request for Sreeram to US”

“What u mean, To us???” Raised eye bro!

I read it again.

“Request for Sreeram to US”

“To US?? You mean, to The US.., United States of America???”

Eyes popped out.

Come on dude, this is early morning and you are not supposed to send prank e-mails like these.

I looked around. All were looking busy. Ok, that’s normal.
I checked the date. 3 more months to April. Safe.
I pinched myself. Ouch!
Finally, I checked the authenticity of the sender and the email itself and…., and…..,

The shocking realization! Looks original, baby!!!!

I know that the project is totally messed up and it is the recovery plan of the recovery plan that is going on but.....,

"Is he mad??"

I went to confirm this with my manager and she seemed to be in a bigger shock. I imagined a chain of shocks passing from me to my manager to her superior etc… that was funny!

“They want to absorb me to their location”, I told my friends.

“They want to move him from here so that others can work unhindered”, my friends had a different version.

Watever it was, the fact was that I am gona fly.

And that is how it happened.

New year resolutions, 2009.

In 28 years, after celebrating that many new years and probably 4 or 5 new year resolutions I had arrived at this conclusion that this is not my stuff. Not that I do not feel the spirit of the new year or I do not anticipate a better future or I do not have the drive for betterment, but due to the simple complex reason that I never stick to them. I tell my friends that there is a limit to the personal betterment that can be achieved. I know if I am taking another NYR, then it will be like,
“dude, do not plan anything for this year or if planned, stick to them which u will never” and similes…..
But this time, I plan to stick to my plans for a change... (Note the point, I plan to...)
My new year resolutions, 2009.
1. Need a lifestye change. Stay happy, stay healthy is my moto for this year. How long it will take for breaking one big pack into six small packs? Lets see!
2. Some pple say that I am too much emotional. They say that I am emotional and that makes me weak leaving me behind the fast paced world. And in return, I tell them that this is one of my strengths and something which differentiates me from this emotionless world. But ofcourse I know that I must apply breaks on my impulsive nature that usually follows an emotional hype.I understand that these are good only for characters on screen and not for me. Look before you leap, think before acting etc etc are some of those old sayings to put my thoughts in short.
3. This is my father's wish. Higher studies. He surely is unaware of my B.Tech struggles, I know.
4.I know I am spending too much on buying books that interest me, but I am not reading them or atleast I am not finishing them. I know this is the procrastinate in me and he needs to be killed. I want to rediscover my reading speed.
5. Classical music..!!
6. Upgrade my home recording studio into a semi professional one.
7. I plan to reduce the time spend on monitor staring that is non productive from a wallet perspective. Come on buddy, at 28 it is difficult to find a GF through ymsgr.
8. I just roll my eyes when my father asks about the amount that I have in my wallet. I stopped guessing the amount after a number of failed attempts. So this is another of my NYRs...Maintain proper accounts on how i am spending each ruppee. Afterall, how many times will I hear the same stories again and again from the old person??
9. Till now I have been a falling leaf in wind, wandering aimlessly and carried by destiny. I need a sense of responsibility that can keep me on track. I have decided that I will act like a very responsible person hoping that one day it will become a part of my character.
10. And this is the most important one. I plan to (Note the point, I plan to...)stick to what I have planned so far.

The D-day-A story unveils-

Wednesday 12/11/2008. 8:30 pm, IST.
Two souls, somewhere in Kerala.
They are packing their luggage right now.
It seems like they are getting ready for a journey.
Yes, it is. They want to meet their son in Chennai and the journey is scheduled for tomorrow.
The train, Trivandrum Chennai Express reaches the nearby station at around 8 pm tomorrow and will reach Chennai by 10- 10.30 in the morning, next day. Their son had just phoned them to see how things are moving at their end and was happy that they are almost done with their packing and are anxiously waiting for the clock to hit 8pm tomorrow.

Excerpts from a telephone convo that happend.
“Don’t even think about cleaning ur house! I want to see it as it is now.”,a weak attempt to explain himself was mercilessly out shadowed by an old voice.
“But…..it is so….......”
"So...?"
“Dad, its ok. It is not that bad either..But”
“No!”
“Ah, Ok, let it be so then….!!”

Thursday 13/11/2008. 7:30 am, IST.
Four souls, some apartment in Chennai.
Three of them are frantically cleaning the dirty house as much as they can before the sun rises tomorrow. Their main targets are the orphan waste papers lying shamelessly on the floor, scattered clothes and of course, liquor bottles kept as souvenirs of some grand evenings.
Even their house servant is missing for the last couple of weeks and they know that the situation is worse. They have been cleaning the house since the phone call happend.
The other soul who just got up is searching for the newspaper. Brush in his hand. He is not at all interested in the frantic struggle going around him. While reading the newspaper, the fourth soul as usual moves into some dreamworld.....

A flashback.

Pointing to the scattered stuffs on the dining table, sofa, bed, floor……., the lady of the house is shouting at her son.
“Ur sister is not like this.”
"So..???"
"She keeps everything clean and tidy, not like u, littering around.."
“Mom, anymore coffee left??”
"No!"
"Tea??"
"I don't know; Go to the kitchen and see. And I am not going to wash your glass!!"

Later, sipping the cold cardamom tea which she had prepared in the morning and watching TV, her son tells her in a feable voice..., his eyes half closed.
“Mom, u know wat?! I am a firm believer of entropy and how that sustains life in the universe. An ordered pattern will never survive the test of time. I am here to unbalance the system equation or add entropy to it and she balances it. I unbalance it again, she balances it again. I trained her to what she is right now and....and....,
"Of whom are u blabbering abt??"
The response was quick and sharp.
"Who else! Ur daughter, My sis!!"

The Anticlimax.
My parents know my habits and it is my roomies who r in trouble.
“Come on guys, don’t let my parents think that U pple are also just like me .... Don't let yourself down!!!” ;)

It is D-day for u all!

Recurring Dreams

My nights were silent and smooth with not even a single clock tick heard in between those vast hours.
But, not any more..!
I see these recurring dreams and my sleeps are broken. It is quite unbelievable that the same dream repeats in its entirety or a similar one unvails with the same outcome. I really do not know why I am seeing such dreams at this point in my life.
"I mean, I am not a student anymore to fail in an exam?!"
"That too, Biology??!!"
"Hello, I did engineering!!!!!"
Recurring Dreams.....
Plot #1
Back to my college days.
Final semester.
Study leave is almost over and the exams are about to start within one or two days. Ofcourse I have studied everything except this subject called Biology (What the...!!). Did I purposefully avoided that?? Yeah, I must have, because I remember it had one long chapter on "I dont remember what" and I did not want to go through it.
I am about to fail.
I realise that.
And I am tensed.
Plot #2
This was the recent one.
Subject is different, English I guess....., (Hello, I did Engineeeeringgggggggg!!!!).
Exam hall....,
My pass or fail depends on the person sitting next to me and I want some inspiration from whatever he had written.
But the examiner is too smart and she is about to move me to an isolated place!
I see trouble!
Almost the same plot, the same tensed situation, and the fear of failure...; both these dreams had plenty in common.
It kills.....
But I must say one thing.
The relief that we find once we wakeup...
The realisation that it was just a dream......
Oh, Blizz...... ;-)

Underperformer

"I have always seen u as an underperformer", he told me this when v were chatting. His tone pretty serious.
I know y he was saying this and I could not really blame him also.He sincerely wants me to push forward in life, giving justice to my self, my karma and my karmic skills.
I never did.

"But who is performing here?! I am here to live and not to perform.....", I wanted to retaliate but Obviously I didnt.

Yes, He was right!

But sometimes it really hurts when pple give such tags ,watever be their intention, gud or bad.Ofcourse, I may not be aiming the stars Or I might be too lost in some fantacy world that I am not realising that the world has gone past me. Whatever it is, I believe that the word when used on humans is really a misnomer.

There is a saying in malayalam...., "onnu chathu matonninu valamakuka"-"one dies and becomes nutrition to another"- and the world has become too complex that the only rule that sells is this, be it among friends or relatives or in home or workplace.

If anyone had noticed me as an underperformer, then its just because that I dont want to thrive upon your flesh and that I am pretty content with myself as an underperformer...,for ever.

Well, those who want to perform, plz perform. And I will stay back happily watching their performance!

Oh, it repeats!!

Here I am, once again in front of you!

Like always, I will try my best to not to cook up any stories or exaggerate any events just to convince you (and myself) that the world around me is still ticking or something is happening at least. It seems like my Life is showing up new sign of activities, and there are a few things worth mentioning.

If I remember it correctly (just a style of writing, actually it is correct!), I wrote my first blog entry on a sleepy afternoon in office inorder to save my head from colliding with the desk (to be frank, my head had several narrow escapes…). I would like to give a full glass of chilled beer to that person who found out that, “History repeats itself”. Look at me……Here I am trying to save my head again. Oh, it repeats!!

So, how long it has been since I posted anything in my blog?? Almost one year, I suppose. The ‘one entry per month’ rule was working just fine for me and then it turned out to be a tough one to meet. I was doing brilliantly in the initial days, meeting every deadline. But later, I failed miserably and I know where it went wrong and why. I had taken a silent oath that promised to change the above rule into a new ‘one entry per week’ rule. The rationale behind such a step was that, with this new rule, I thought, I should be able to energize my bio-psycho-physiological daemons to work harder and…….., and I’ll end up with at least one post per month….Curse me only; it worked and I went off completely!

Coming to think about this, it is not the first time that events similar to these had happened in my life. I remember my struggle to get up in the morning and in sync with my time piece alarm set to 6:00 am. Initially I kept it near to my pillow so that I could hear the alarm even in dead sleep. But then, I just stopped it and went back to sleep. This same incident repeated for weeks. I did a self analysis and found out the real problem, which is, the time piece is kept within hand reachable distance. So, the next night I kept it away with the volume at its maximum. The alarm went out and I had to get up from bed to turn it off so that I can continue my sleep. Ooopz! The former setup was better! And after that realization, I was never quite worried about getting up at a fixed time in the morning. I somehow managed to do it at my own leisure!

This is me.
Have u ever stayed in awe watching a leaf falling onto the ground after repeatedly drawing many imaginary circles with the wind??? Have u ever wondered where it would ultimately touch the land??? Well, I have, and now I realize……
That leaf is my life itself.

Yea, as always, I dragged a bit. But I know, by this time you might have already accustomed with me and these habits. So, what I wanted to say is that, I have left my roots behind and went ahead for making some money. Very much unlike me, I know, but that’s the truth. It has been almost two months now since I left Trivandrum, Althara temple, Vellayambalam, my friends there, and all those funs. I am not looking back into those aspects or rethinking on my decision as I had done all those prior to accepting this offer from an MNC. But still………..

While I was roaming about the streets of Trivandrum, there was one thing that I could have done. I could have resumed my music lessons. I was in the lookout for a good teacher for more than 3 years, but failed to find any. Surprising, isn’t it? Now I wonder that whether I will repeat the same stuff here also. Anyways, at the age 27, I have started to take my singing a little more seriously. I have told most of my friends here to find a guru for me so that I can resume my classical music training. One big advantage of asking ur friends help in getting a music teacher is that they will be forced to think that u r a good singer and this feeling u can inject in them without even making a whistle. But seriously, I am beginning to realize the importance of this and how much I value the singer in me. If you find a “gud voice” with “exceptional singing abilities” in Yahoo chat room Kerala: 2, doing all that he can do to stay on the mic and sing, ignoring the threats and foul words of his fellow roomies, then it’s probably me! No, I don’t reply to PMs, but I do send them a lot….. So, if u r lucky, then I will catch u!

Now, don’t think that I am waiting for bumping into a cute girl. These days, I have become very cautious while meeting a new girl. My friends in Trivandrum, almost always used to tease me that whenever I make a new friendship from the opposite gender pool, she is destined to get married within the next 6 months. They say that after knowing me, these girls get convinced that there are worse things in life and there after, they accept their destiny, happily. The situation is so worse that my friends even tell me that they have a friend whose marriage is not yet over and I must talk a few words with her (just a few words, not more!). I console myself that most of the girls whom I meet these days are at the verge of getting married and it has nothing to do with my looks. But it has got into my nerves. If I loose my job here, I’ll open a phone booth, where unmarried ladies can talk to me over BSNL, wait for the next six months and get married to someone…………

Sounds funny???

Yea!

Jai Hind.......Again!!

There it goes.....
Another Happy Independence day.
Ofcourse, when u get a day off at the office, its worth to be called, a Happy day.
Now, as a proud happy Indian, what did I do today to make my country proud??
I stayed at home!!!!

Y do we celebrate these days???

In TV and on streets, I saw great personalities(i dont know who they are or wht they do) singing the National Anthem and saying very inspiring emotional words abt motherland and how we gained independence. I saw pain and struggle on their faces as if they just came out of the freedom struggle. But were wer these pple hiding for the rest of the 364 days??? Y pple become so emotional abt their motherland "only" on this one day????
I think by celebrating the day as our Independence day, v r limiting our responsibility.
To be frank, I, an average citizen celebrated his Independence day by sleeping and enjoying the holiday at home with family. Ofcourse its good, but is it really contributing anything to that bigger cause? I guess not!

Jan 1st------------April 1st--------April15th---------December 25th---------December31st.
These remaind me of the passing time only.
Ok, No offense meant.Me too love my country!!!!!

Once again He helped me. Another tag!!Though i was thankful at first, it soon turned out to be a curse. Gosh! How many things pple demand!!!!!
ThankYou man.You will be punished for this, later ;)
Ollrite, the point is ,I am back in action. Sorry! :)
The idea behind this tag was to travel backwards in time by 10 yrs,to the present, and then 5 yrs into the future, recollecting some old memories, current ambitions and other interests, everything in list of 5s.

Ok.Here it goes.

Ten Years Ago

  2. Karnatic vocal classes, concerts, Cricket practice sessions, tournaments …..Almost wondering now, how I used to do all these at that time??!
  3. Wanted to be an austronaut or a NASA scientist. Space meant a lot to me at that time. Now also, but of a different kind ;)
  4. I had contacts with my school friends and teachers.
  5. I was "more" innocent ;)

Five Years Ago

Five Things I'd do If I had Money

Haha! I would do nothing at all.Just sit back and relax in the comfort of any of my cottages spread across the globe.:))

Or may be at that time, I would be longing to lead the life of a common man, which is I am now!Who knows....!!

Other than these, I would

  1. Spend spend spend the money, until every single penny is over and I am forced to work hard again.
  2. Like to do something for music.Set up a Recording studio where anyone with good taste in music can try their voice, songs and luck.
  3. Travel round the globe like a tramp, who is worried abt absolutely nothing , happy to die wherever or watever he is.Wow, that must be something gr8.Now I know y God has decided against my wish.
  4. No idea!
  5. No idea!

To be frank, I don’t know what I’d do.Ofcourse I would spend them like crazy, purchasing everything I like.

Disclaimer: Watever I have written here are purely instantaneous. Any similarity to that of an extravagant person is truly by chance.Hmmm, say 50:50???

Places I Escape to

  1. Comfort of Home and strength of relations
  2. My solitude and my thoughts
  3. W3
  4. Where I am a complete stranger.

  5. Meaningful talks (very rare to find these days, in my life).

Five Things I Can Live Without

  1. My cell phone. There was a time when I was thinking that it’s an extension of myself. But now I’v learnt the truth the hard way.Its more than one week now without a cell phone. Ofcourse I can continue like this, but I must buy one soon.I have other responsibilities ;)
  2. Pastries and burgers.
  3. Non vegs
  4. Hot drinks and cigars ;)
  5. Partying… ;)

(The last two were only for filling up the vaccant spaces....I dont drink or smoke. So entry 4 is irrelevant. Partying, hmm, well.... is nothing spectacular here. Is just a get-together kind of...)

  2. Kashmir
  3. Paris
  4. Rome
  5. Egypt

( Accompanying music- "Swapnangal swapnangale, Ningal swargakumarikalallo"

Now the formality. Must tag this on un-known innocent bloggers. This is the same philosophy behind "I dont care even if i am dead as long as U too r with me." Sounds romantic ha? ;)

Chosen ones, not many actually. They might have been tagged already .Who cares!
